Asked by Tony Santos, freelance direct response copywriter and creative strategist (DTC health and supplements).
"across your supplement advertorials (or other long-form copy), map each funnel's opening lead type (offer, promise, problem-solution, big secret, proclamation, story) against the awareness stage it's clearly written for. I want to see which lead types brands actually reach for at each stage, and where the common mismatches show up."
The short version. We classified 56 opening pages from 49 supplement and health funnels in the library. Brands reach for direct leads far more than the textbook says they should: 35 of 56 openings are Offer, Promise or Problem-Solution, and 10 of the 26 pages clearly written for problem-aware readers still open with a direct lead. Indirect leads (Story, Big Secret, Proclamation) cluster almost entirely in pain relief, hearing, hair and "unusual mechanism" products where the reader needs a reason to believe. Familiar consumable categories (mushroom coffee, greens, collagen, magnesium, protein) open with product-named promises or a straight offer and let the ad do the awareness work. The mismatches that show up most are (1) offer leads on cold Meta traffic, which works when the ad pre-sells and fails when it doesn't, and (2) product-named promise headlines on problem-aware audiences, which skip the mechanism step. Each row below is a real page you can open.
Denominator: 56 opening pages from 49 brands. We took every supplement or health funnel in the library that has a scraped long-form pre-sale page (advertorial, listicle, pre-sell, sales letter, VSL lander, or a PDP used as the paid landing page) and classified the first page the paid click lands on. Where a brand runs materially different openings (Akusoli Meta vs native, Primal Viking LP1 vs LP2, MediLisk v1 vs v2, Nebroo step 1 vs step 2) each opening is its own row. Checkout, cart, upsell and email pages are excluded. Pet, gadget and pure info-product funnels are excluded.
Lead type follows the six Great Leads (Masterson and Forde): three direct (Offer, Promise, Problem-Solution) and three indirect (Big Secret, Proclamation, Story). Awareness stage follows Schwartz: Unaware, Problem-aware, Solution-aware, Product-aware, Most-aware. We assigned the stage the headline and first screen are written for, judged by what the copy assumes the reader already knows: does it name the problem, the solution category, the product, or the price? Every headline in the table is quoted from the page OCR or the screenshot, and every row links to the full page.
Counts of opening pages by lead type (rows) and the awareness stage they are written for (columns). Darker is more. Zero cells are the interesting ones: nobody in the library writes a Story or Big Secret lead for a product-aware reader, and nobody writes an Offer lead for a problem-aware one.
| Lead type \ Awareness stage | Unaware | Problem-aware | Solution-aware | Product-aware | Most-aware | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Offer direct | 0 | 0 | 3 | 7 | 2 | 12 |
| Promise direct | 0 | 5 | 7 | 5 | 0 | 17 |
| Problem-Solution direct | 0 | 5 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 6 |
| Big Secret indirect | 0 | 8 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 8 |
| Proclamation indirect | 0 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 0 | 7 |
| Story indirect | 0 | 6 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 6 |
| Total | 0 | 26 | 14 | 14 | 2 | 56 |
Reading the columns: the library has no supplement page we would call truly unaware. Every opening names a symptom, a body part or a category. The "unaware" work is being done by the ad creative and by quizzes (SciatiEase, Gundry, ActivatedYou, Seranova all put a quiz or a 4,000-word letter before the price). The right-hand columns are dominated by Offer and product-named Promise leads, which is where most of the mismatches live.
This is where the classic advertorial sits. Pain relief, neuropathy, sciatica, hearing loss, hair loss, chronic fatigue and sleep all open indirect. The brand withholds the mechanism and either tells a story (Story), makes an authority claim (Proclamation) or poses a riddle (Big Secret). The reader already hurts and has usually tried something; the job of the lead is to make the old solutions wrong.

The same problem-aware column also holds the direct leads of the "familiar category" brands. Grüns, MoonBrew, Primal Queen and Obvi all name the problem and go straight to the promise or the solution, because their category (greens gummies, magnesium cocoa, organ capsules, fat burner) needs no mechanism education.

When the reader already knows the solution category (TRT, beef organs, Botox, GLP-1, magnesium, compression), brands do one of two things. The aggressive version is a listicle Proclamation against the incumbent solution. The softer version is a Promise headline that names the category so the reader self-qualifies.

These pages open with the SKU, the price or the discount. In the library this is the default for mushroom coffee, greens, protein and any brand with celebrity or endorsement traffic. The correct examples are the ones where the traffic really is product-aware: NativePath's Kim Komando page, IM8's celebrity flywheel, GlucoTrust's affiliate PDP.

A mismatch is a lead type the textbook would not pair with the stage the traffic is actually in. Two patterns recur across the 56 pages. Neither is automatically a mistake; the FOTW host flags one of them as working at scale and another as weak.
The page opens with a discount or a product introduction, but the ad library shows the page is where cold prospecting traffic lands. Great Leads would call for an indirect or at least a Promise lead. Whether it works depends entirely on whether the ad creative did the awareness job first.

ClarityMD's folder labels this page the "winner advertorial" for cold traffic, yet it opens with "60% OFF" and the product name; the problem section ("What's Really Behind Your Kidney Decline, Gut Issues, and Constant Fatigue") starts one screen down. ColonBroom puts "up to 70% OFF" in the headline of a quiz-entry page. SkinnyFit does the same with "FLASH SALE! 50% OFF + $50 IN FREE GIFTS" above a GLP-1 promise. The library has no host commentary on whether the ClarityMD or ColonBroom versions outperform their promise-led siblings.
Viasox, ClarityMD (tinnitus), Rosabella and Sculptique all put the brand or product name first and the promise second. The reader was targeted by a symptom (swollen feet, ringing ears, cortisol, bloating) and has not necessarily heard of the product. The headline skips the mechanism step that the indirect-lead brands spend a full screen on.

Compare with the same-category pages that keep the product out of the headline: Ancestral Supplements ("Feel Better Than You Have In Years With This Forgotten Superfood") and Particle for Men ("Deduct 12 Years Off Your Age With This Breakthrough For Men"). FOTW breakdown on Particle: "the advertorial gets the cold paid traffic, the PDP gets the warm traffic and the navigation clicks." Particle keeps two pages so the promise lead never has to carry warm traffic and the PDP never has to carry cold.

LuluTox's control listicle is "5 Reasons Why TikTok Famous LuluTox Detox Tea Is Top Choice For Weight Loss." It names the product and asserts fame to a reader who has never heard of it. FOTW breakdown: 33% of ads go to this page and "their control is the listicle advertorial." The host's read is that the page works because it is "structured around multiple avatars" (hormonal weight, bloating, cravings), so each cold reader finds their own problem in reason 1, 2 or 3. The proclamation borrows awareness ("TikTok famous") instead of building it.

Sorted by awareness stage, then lead type. Every headline is quoted from the page. "Traffic / context" is what the library records about where the page sits (ad channel, ad share, position in the funnel), taken from FOTW breakdowns and folder labels.
